The definition of open source deals not only with the fact that the source code to the program is free for any party to view, but many other facets. Most other terms of the definition deal with allowing free distribution to anyone who wants it and some terms of redistribution. The OSD (Open Source Definition) sets forth all of the rules one needs to satisfy to be considered OSI (Open Source Initiative) Certified. This evolution of open source allows users to see up front that their software is using an open-source development plan. The basic concept of open source is rather simple to comprehend, but its far-reaching results are more than the originators could have hoped for (Open Source Initiative). |
