Open Source

My personal experience with open source software has been a terrific one. Initially, the software that I ran on my web server was Windows NT running IIS, just because of the learning curve associated with any of the other possible choices. Needless to say, this was quite an expense. After having trouble with the software that I paid so dearly for, I switched to the open-source Linux operating system running Apache as the webserver, all for free. Not only did the open-source solution work better and more efficiently, it was also free. Finding tools, programming languages, and applications for this platform has also been a breeze. Everything is free and everything runs like a champ. This has obviously been the best choice for me. However, for larger companies, I can see the lack of structure being a great detractor from open-source software's viability.
